C Boost Glide Duration (Multi round)

Doug Hillson

Overview of Rules:

C BG Duration requires the modeler to build a glider which may separate into parts and glide down. The contestant with the longest duration wins. In multi round there is a maximum time of 240 seconds per flight. In multi-round, 2 models must be used for the first 3 flights. If multiple contestants have three maxes at the end of three flights a final unlimited flyoff round will be held, a third model can be used per Pinkbook rule 15.12.2.

Design Considerations:

To get maximum performance from a boost glider, the glider should be as light weight as possible and have as little drag as possible.

Tips for Beginners:

If a modeler has never flown a boost glider before, it would be strongly recommended to build a kit or follow an existing plan. Good craftsmanship can significantly improve performance regardless of the design of the boost glider chosen.

To decrease drag in a boost glider a lot of small things should be done such as sanding the boom of the glider well, or making sure wings and horizontal and vertical stabilizers are as straight as possible.

To decrease weight, lightweight balsa (6 lbs/ft3) should be used for wings and hard balsa (16 lbs/ft3)  for fuselage booms.

Competition / lightweight balsa can be difficult to find in a regular hobby store or craft store. The author has had good success ordering online at - http://www.sigmfg.com/
