Detailed information regarding the other contest events can be found below.

R&D - Research and Development Rules

Research and Development will not be one of the sanctioned National Meet events for NARAM this year. Instead, the event will be held as a stand-alone competition using standard "Pink Book" rules as a basis. This effort is being made in hopes to improve the quality and focus of R&D projects, from that of a 'NAR competition points event' to a more logical event where the focus is the research and development itself. Prizes and awards will be presented in this special event.

Rules

Research and Development Competition will be conducted according to "Pink Book" Rule #63, with the following addendums:

  1. Event will be conducted in the following three age divisions (age as of August 1, 2003):
    Junior Ages thru 15
    Leader Ages 16-20
    Senior Ages 21 & over
  2. For the purpose of determining eligibility of projects which have previously been entered in a sanctioned R&D competition (Rule 63.1), this event will have a contest factor equal to that of the National Meet. In other words, the project is eligible if it has not been presented at a prior NARAM.

  3. Omit Rule 63.2, and all references to Weighting Factors, as there is no weighting factor for this event. Only places will be awarded.

  4. Omit entire last sentence of Rule 63.12, as no points are being awarded and disqualifications are unwarranted.

RCG - NARAM-45 Radio Controlled Glider Fun Event Rules

General

Event is open to any radio controlled rocket or boost glider that is propelled to altitude using NAR safety certified model rocket engines (1/4A through G). No other source of propulsion (i.e., electric motors, jetex, etc. is allowed). The gliding portion of the model must have at least one control surface that is radio operated. The gliding portion of the model is timed from first motion on the launcher until first contact with a ground based object. Models can have multiple stages or motors clustered. The goal of this event is to achieve the longest flight duration. Total impulse of combined motors must be less than or equal to 160 Newton-seconds.

Scoring

Contestants are allowed 3 qualifying attempts all day Saturday or Sunday before 2:00 pm. The best score from the qualifying attempts is used to calculate final standings or qualification for the fly off round. The target goal for the qualifying attempts is 300 seconds. Any flight time equal to or above 300 seconds will be considered a ‘MAX’ and will qualify the contestant for the fly off round.

Models that have a combined impulse of less than or equal to 20 Newton-seconds (D class and below) are allowed a 2 times multiplier for the first 150 seconds of the flight. i.e., if a 10 NS model scores 150 seconds, this modeler’s score will be 150 x 2, or 300. In the case of this example score would be scored as a MAX, qualifying the contestant for the fly off round.

Fly off round

Fly off round will begin at 2:30 pm on Sunday. All flights must originate before 3:00 pm on Sunday. Objective of the fly off round is to accumulate the most time aloft.

Models that have a combined impulse of less than or equal to 20 Newton-seconds (D class and below) are allowed a 2 times multiplier for the first 150 seconds of the flight. Time above the first 150 seconds of flight will be scored at a 1 time multiplier. i.e., if a 10 NS model scores 200 seconds, this modeler’s score will be 150 x 2 + 50, or 350.

Final scoring will be calculated ordering all of the fly off scores and then the non-fly off contestants best qualifying attempts.

SAC - Section America Challenge Rules

This event is open to all sections which have one or more members registered at NARAM-45. The contest will closely follow the same rules used by the Team America Challenge. Each section may enter one model for one official flight attempt. Model must be constructed by one or more members of that particular section. Entries will be responsible for providing their own Adept A1 altimeter for flight. All flight attempts must be made from the sport range on Saturday, August 2 or Sunday, August 3.

Contestants should refer to the complete Team America Challenge rules. The general differences will be that teams will actually be sections in this case, and the event will not have any preliminary qualification. No monetary awards will be presented; only trophies. Any questions regarding rules should be referred to the NARAM-45 organizers for clarification. The purpose of this event is to encourage section members to work together towards a common goal, and to offer an alternative means for sections to compete head to head at NARAM, without involving NAR competition points. It should also prove interesting to see if experienced NAR rocketry flyers can outdo the high school kids.

OddRoc - Odd Rocket Contest Rules

Contestants in this event may include all registered sport or contest flyers for NARAM-45. Motors qualified for this event may include any currently certified by NAR or TRA up to the maximum allowed by the waiver at NARAM-45. Materials allowed for use in the entry are to follow the same rules that apply to model and high power rockets.

A trophy will be awarded to the top model as determined by a popular vote of registered flyers. All registered flyers will be entitled to vote. Entrants are to leave their Odd-Roc model(s) on display for viewing in the scale room Thursday evening by 7:30 P.M. Voting will take place between 7:30 P.M. and 10 P.M. Thursday evening. The people's choice winner will be announced during the awards banquet on Friday night.

Each Odd-Roc model must make at least one qualified safe flight between Saturday, August 2 and the closing of the range on Thursday, August 7. A qualified flight will be determined by the on duty RSO. These flights will take place on the sport range. There is no limit to the number of flights made. Only those models whose flight cards have been turned in and have a qualifying flight will be considered for the trophy.
